Last night President Barack Obama made history by being the first sitting president to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
However before the interview even aired, the White House was already throwing out mea culpas for a comment President Obama made during the interview that was supposed to focus primarily on the economy and discussing the AIG bonus scandal.
Leno asked about the White House bowling alley -- after Obama famously flopped at the 10-pin sport during his campaign last year. "
I bowled a 129," the President said to laughter from show guests."
That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically. It's "
like the Special Olympics or something," the president replied.
The White House scrambled to downplay the joke in an
official statement: "
The president made an offhand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics.
President Obama thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world."
